For 10 years after the Second World War the devastated area to the north of St Paul’s Cathedral lay dormant, until In 1955 a joint London County Council and City of London rebuilding plan was conceived in an attempt to halt the City's depopulation. Previously the City Council had commissioned architects Chamberlin, Powell and Bon to design the Golden Lane Estate immediately to the north on a traffic-free grid, and so successful was this development that the same architects were selected to design the 35-acre Barbican development, again on a traffic-free grid - a colossal undertaking for a single practice. The Barbican concept would not be limited to the provision of housing: it was also planned to attract outsiders into the Corbusier-style complex. Accordingly, a theatre was built into the scheme as part of a wider vision encompassing an arts centre and the Museum of London. The Guildhall School of Music, which opened in 1997, is here, as is the City of London School for Girls.
On 2 March 1982 the Barbican Theatre was opened by the Queen as part of a larger arts complex, and in the same year the Royal Shakespeare Company became resident.
In the auditorium, arranged around a thrust stage, no bright colours are allowed to distract attention. Considerable consideration was given to sight lines through a clever arrangement of forward- rather than backward-stepping shallow balconies, with slips to left and right known in-house as 'the ashtrays'. At stalls level, continental seating - unbroken lengths of curving seating entered from the sides - is controlled by electromagnetic door locking: no latecomers! Much thought has also been given in the theatre to the comfort of, and easy access for, disabled persons.
Running along the back of the upper circle is the Sir Robert Stephens Room, dedicated to the memory of the great classical actor who joined the National Theatre in 1963, and died aged just 64 in 1996, having distinguished himself particularly in the leading Shakespearean roles.

Chorégraphe:
Avec: Samantha Womack (Nellie), Paulo Szot (sharing the role of Emile), Jason Howard (sharing the role of Emile), Daniel Koek ( Lt Joe Cable), Alex Ferns (Luther Billis), Loretta Ables Sayre (Bloody Mary)

Commentaire: This production opened in 2008 at New York’s Lincoln Center, running for two years and winning seven Tony Awards. The show had been re-created for a UK tour starting at the Barbican. With a 25 piece orchestra, it featured the Brazilian baritone Paulo Szot and Loretta Abies Sayre from the original New York production. Paulo Szot was replaced by Jason Howard for the first three weeks of September. The production received three Olivier nominations, including Best Musical Revival, but won none. During the post-Barbican tour various cast changes included Rebecca Thornhill as Nellie Forbush, Matthew Cammelle as Emile de Beque and Jodi Kimura as Bloody Mary. The tour has been extended to at least August 2012, when it will plays Sheffield Lyceum, after which it is booked for a two week run in Dublin.  (plus)

Presse: "It's a perfectly decent revival of a Rodgers and Hammerstein classic but with little of the pizzazz."
Michael Billington for The Guardian

"Though not quite as lavish as the original Lincoln Centre production, this touring version with beautiful South Sea island designs and a fine 25-piece pit orchestra making the most of the brilliant score, still proves a moving and uplifting experience."
Charles Spencer for The Daily Telegraph

"Somewhere along the line he [director Bartlett Sher] has managed to eliminate both the romance and the fantasy."
Paul vale for The Stage

"Polished rather than dazzling - lyrical, occasionally beguiling but not truly powerful."
Henry Hitchings for The Evening Standard

"Though it is undoubtedly a very good, immensely thoughtful production...it doesn’t dazzle in the way one might expect. It is beautifully sung and delivered with plenty of zest and energy, yet it still seems a little stiff and emotionally restrained."
Sarah Hemming for The Financial Times

"For all the talk of how the production draws out the darkness of the racial issues by reincorporating discarded material, this comes across as a highly accomplished, but faintly bland and traditional treatment. ..Unfortunately, there's next to no sexual chemistry between the two leading performers. That's symptomatic of a production that seems to have lost something in crossing the Atlantic and is deficient in that spark that turns respect into rapture."
Paul Taylor for The Independent

Presse: 'The National Theatre of Scotland's acclaimed production about the Black Watch Regiment's experiences in Iraq returns for a second London run and proves as moving as imaginative as ever with its combination of verbatim theatre, spectacular choreography and deafening battle effects.' The Daily Telegraph

'…the precision and passion of the new ensemble in John Tiffany’s staging is remarkable, while the raw emotion of the piece, with a script by Gregory Burke and stirring music by Davey Anderson, proves deeply affecting.' The Daily Telegraph 4*

'It remains a stunning piece of theatre, violently real and unafraid of lifting the veil on military conflict.' Whatsonstage 4*

'Burke's drama remains a potent, vividly unsentimental portrait of modern military life and its discontents.' Evening Standard 4*

'…the brilliance of this piece is its authenticity.' The Mail on Sunday 4*

'John Tiffany’s astonishing visceral production, played out as if it were a military tattoo, is thrillingly illuminated by Steven Hoggett’s movement choreography that charges it up with raw physical power.' Sunday Express 4*

'…post-Iraq, ‘Black Watch’ stands as the most important dramatic account of the war from the invaders’ perspective.' Time Out Magazine 4*

'This is absolutely the kind of story that the National Theatre of Scotland should and will continue sharing with the world.' The British Theatre Guide

Reviews from previous productions:

'...a wonderful piece of theatre...' The Guardian

‘Black Watch is a necessary reminder of the transporting power that is unique to theater. Other narrative forms — fiction, memoirs, film, television — could tell the story that is told here. But none could summon and deploy the array of artistic tools that is used with such mastery and immediacy.' The New York Times

'In the men's coarse, uncompromising language is wit, wisdom and an absolute absence of apology or self-pity. The effect places beauty alongside brutality and endows the characters with an immense dignity . . . the fusion of text and production is seamless, unsentimental and emotionally devastating.' The Times 5*

Commentaire: A new tour to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the show began performances on 12 December 2009, at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff. This touring version included a new set, new costumes, new direction and alterations to the original orchestrations. There was no revolving stage and the scenery was inspired by the paintings of Victor Hugo. The tour then played seven major UK dates, and a special engagement in Paris, before returning to the Barbican, where the original 1985 production commenced. This tour ended its run at the Barbican.
Trevor Nunn, stated publicly that he was profoundly unhappy and felt betrayed that something inferior has been created by outsiders, and that he had not been consulted or involved in the new production. Cameron Mackintosh replied :  (plus)

Commentaire: This had undergone some re-writing since its Stratford East outings, and, with a running time of three hours, some critics felt it was now somewhat overblown and drawn out. However, Rolan Bell’s performance was even stronger, and, in the words of the Financial Times critic, “It is very hard to dislike a show that dismisses its audience for the interval with the mischievous words ‘Fifteen minute ganja break’.” The show transferred to the Playhouse in June where it ran for fourteen weeks, closing on September 13th.  (plus)

Joué durant

Compositeur: Tom Waits •

Libettiste: William S. Burroughs •
Metteur en scène: Bob Wilson •
Chorégraphe:
Avec: Matt McGrath (Wilhelm), Mary Margaret O’Hara (Kathchen), Marianne Faithfull (Pegleg), Dean Robinson (Bertram), Jack Willis, Monika Tahal, Gabrielle Santinelli, Nigel Richards, Richard Strange, Sona Cervena, Jake Thornton, Janet Henfrey.

Commentaire: Based on the German folktale which had been used in Weber’s opera, “Der Freischutz”, this version was a collaboration between theatre director Robert Wilson, musician Tom Waits, and the writer William Burroughs. It contains strong autobiographical elements from Burroughs' real life: he accidentally shot his own wife in a drunken attempt at recreating the William Tell legend. The premiere was in Hamburg in March 1990, and an English language version had played Canada in 1998 and New York in 1999. The 1993 album, with its mixture of Kurt Weill-type operatic and avant-garde sounds was highly successful. This London production, with its quasi-Japanese Kabuki staging, trapezes, symbolism and stylised settings, was the prelude to a world tour, later moving to San Francisco and Sydney. Due to ill health, Marianne Faithfull was forced to withdraw from the production in Australia and her understudy Nigel Richards filled the part.  (plus)

Commentaire: The show had been updated with topical references and turned into a kind of rock concert. It was almost universally condemned by the critics. The version was not helped by the fact that ‘Andy Crane, the blond and denimed children’s television personality signed up to play Jesus, is strikingly uncharismatic and bland - this resurrection is not good news’.  (plus)

Commentaire: This is an adaptation of John Gay’s masterpiece by John Caird and the composer Ilona Sekacz, first performed at the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1992. It opened at the Swan Theatre on 7th April and played in repertoire for the whole of the 1992 season. It then transferred to the Barbican Theatre in London, opening on the 7th April 1993.
This revival was very much in the “Les Miserables” style, and was described as “low life augmented by high camp”.  (plus)
