Commentaires : Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s multi-award winning musical returns to The London Palladium for a strictly limited run in summer 2020!
Following a premiere at the Edinburgh International Festival produced by the Young Vic in 1972, the musical transferred to the West End the following year. The next major production in London came in 1991, when Jason Donovan took what was to be a career-defining role at the London Palladium.
Various touring productions have played London over the last few decades, but the last major run was in 2007, when a revival of the London Palladium production opened at the Adelphi Theatre.

Commentaires : A new tour to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the show began performances on 12 December 2009, at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff. This touring version included a new set, new costumes, new direction and alterations to the original orchestrations. There was no revolving stage and the scenery was inspired by the paintings of Victor Hugo. The tour then played seven major UK dates, and a special engagement in Paris, before returning to the Barbican, where the original 1985 production commenced. This tour ended its run at the Barbican.
Trevor Nunn, stated publicly that he was profoundly unhappy and felt betrayed that something inferior has been created by outsiders, and that he had not been consulted or involved in the new production. Cameron Mackintosh replied :
Commentaires longs: “I am saddened by Trevor's inaccurate and ungracious remarks. After 25 years, I wished to create a new production that reflected the contemporary appeal of the musical today and it seemed right to engage the energies of a new younger team to do this. I believe that each new generation has to be able to put its own stamp on great material. Over 18 months ago and at every subsequent stage we informed Trevor and John Caird and John Napier of our plans. It is wholly untrue that they were in any way 'kept in the dark'. It is bewildering to me that Trevor Nunn who has spent much of his brilliant career reimagining existing material should be questioning the right of others to do so with Les Miserables.”

Commentaires : Casts of the current London, international tour and original 1985 London productions took part, comprising an ensemble of three hundred performers and musicians This special concert celebrating the show’s 25 th anniversary was marked by the increasingly bitter dispute between Cameron Mackintosh and Trevor Nunn, the original director. Sir Trevor’s sense of betrayal seems to have grown since he was not appointed to direct the new touring version and has deepened because he is not directing this special two-performance concert. Asked if he and Sir Trevor were on speaking terms, Sir Cameron said: "No, actually, and given that Trevor Nunn is about to take over the chair this month of my professorship at Oxford, I just think Trevor's been very silly. Trevor is entitled to his own opinion, but it's sad. He hasn't actually directed Les Miserables on his own, or at all really, since 1987. I sent him a little note saying, 'Don't be so silly. Your memory is as bad as your manners'. But listen, I've got nothing to talk to him about. Trevor sees the world the way he sees it." Sir Cameron said that co-director John Caird, unlike Sir Trevor, has been "an utter gentleman" about things.

Presse : Les critiques sont très bonnes:

"Scenic tweaking aside, and an orchestra shrunk to 20 from 27, this 'Les Miz' will offend none of the musical’s fans with any directorial innovations, and will give them a chance to assess how a new generation of performers meets the challenges of the score." Charles Isherwood for New York Times

"It arrives with fine new orchestrations that allow us to again hear the score’s many riches live, without the extreme closeups pocking the Hollywood version." Joe Dziemianowicz for New York Daily News

"People don’t just sing, they belt to the heavens. And in this new revival, you mostly soar with them." Elisabeth Vincentelli for New York Post

"There's nothing startlingly different, but, under the direction of Laurence Connor and James Powell, it's been freshly conceived, with new staging and design ideas — there are projections based on Hugo's drawings — and thoughtful acting choices that, all together, make the show a more intimate experience." Robert Feldberg for The Record

"This reboot feels faster, grittier, gloomier and, above all, more emphatic than ever, which is saying something for a show that was always an unrelenting assault on the tear ducts." David Rooney for The Hollywood Reporter

"Unlike the tentative 2006 revival, this one is a solid piece of theatrical architecture, built to survive every critical arrow shot through its heart." Marilyn Stasio for Variety

Presse : "Laurence Connor’s production has a cinematic fluency and he keeps the dramatic tension simmering throughout. For all its many merits, however, I find it easier to admire Miss Saigon than to love it." Charles Spencer for Daily Telegraph

"I can't say I was deeply moved, unlike the lady in front of me forever dabbing her eyes, but I came away feeling this is a successful variation on an old tale and put across with exemplary vigour." Michael Billington for The Guardian

"The revelation is Eva Noblezada in her professional debut as Kim. Combining innocence with an incredible vocal range she is the human heart of an impressive production that is fundamentally opera for people who don’t like opera. A stone cold hit." Neil Norman for The Express

"Sir Cameron Mackintosh’s revival of the 1980s musical Miss Saigon is staged with such insistent extravagance that it bludgeons its way to success. Great art? Nope. But big theatre." Quentin Letts for The Daily Mail

"The result is a show of high-stakes intensity, which vividly dramatises private passions against a striking historical background. And its most notable feature is 18-year-old Noblezada (Kim), who seems a remarkable find." Henry Hitchings for The Evening Standard

Producteur :
Avec : Jon Jon Briones (The Engineer), Eva Noblezada (Kim), Alistair Brammer (Chris), Rachelle Ann Go (Gigi), Devin Ilaw (Thuy), Katie Rosie Clarke (Ellen), Nicholas Christopher (John)
Presse : "It’s not as if such stories don’t still have the power to stir suspense and tears. But this eventful, sung-through production out of London, directed by Laurence Connor, feels about as affecting as a historical diorama, albeit a lavishly appointed one." Ben Brantley for New York Times

"This bracing new production from London reminds that whirlybirds can’t whip up emotions. Only good actors can do that. The revival of the musical by Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil ('Les Miserables') has plenty of them." Joe Dziemianowicz for New York Daily News

"Miss Saigon is ultimately stranded between extremes of cynicism and idealism: the Engineer’s cartoonish hunger for American-style excess versus Kim’s bland, maternal purity. What’s lost in between is humanity or ambiguity, songs to tell us more about the characters’ past, their quirks or inner nuances. Instead, stereotyped villains and victims shout-sing at each others’ faces or collapse and bellow, “Nooooo!” (twice). Diversity on Broadway should be celebrated, but give actors of color characters we all can care about." David Cote for Time Out New York

"This is a most worthy revival, and now, minus the controversy, fans are free to re-live the thrill." Roma Torre for NY1

"This is brawny, crowd-pleasing entertainment with a cast of 36 and an 18-piece orchestra. It's not for theater snobs, but the audience's enthusiastic response on the first press night indicated a hearty appetite for its ardent, unabashed sentiments. Mackintosh certainly hasn't scrimped on remounting the show, leaving no mystery as to the reasons for its worldwide success." David Rooney for Hollywood Reporter

"This is what people mean when they talk about 'a Broadway show' — melodic songs, big, beautiful voices, a huge ensemble, full-scale pit orchestra, sumptuous production numbers, and the spectacle of lavish sets and special effects." Marilyn Stasio for Variety

Commentaires : Not since 1971 has Andrew Lloyd-Webber launched a show on Broadway before London's West End, so we can expect that this new production, that will mix songs from the movie with brand new songs by the iconic composer and lyricist Glenn Slater, will be a rockin' spectacular! Oh, and the book comes from Julian Fellowes, the writer of a "relatively unknown" TV show called Downtown Abbey. Nope, we've never heard of it either....

"Andrew Lloyd Webber has entered his second childhood, and it turns out to be a good career move. For his latest offering...this lordly British composer has been hanging out with fifth graders. Youth, it would seem, is rejuvenating." Ben Brantley for New York Times

"Brightman is huggable and kinetic and rocks steady as a slacker who saves the day. The actor lives up to his surname and earns his gold star. Better, gold devil horns." Joe Dziemianowicz for New York Daily News

"'School Of Rock' is a rock solid hit!" Roma Torre for NY1

"It worked for the movie, and wow, does it work on Broadway, a double jolt of adrenaline and sugar to inspire the most helicoptered of tots to play hooky and go shred an ax. For those about to love School of Rock: We salute you." David Cote for Time Out New York

"The crowd-pleasing, upbeat musical based on the beloved film 'School of Rock' opened Sunday at the Winter Garden Theatre with a wondrously rebellious spirit and a superb cast." Mark Kennedy for Associated Press

"Ultimately, what makes this show a crowd-pleaser is the generosity of spirit with which it bestows the reward of cool self-realization on every last outsider and underdog — whether it's the actual children catching an early glimpse of the adults they will become, or the eternal man-child Dewey, proudly resisting that path." David Rooney for Hollywood Reporter

"Alex Brightman maintains his own appealing brand of scruffy charm as Dewey Finn, amiably ceding the spotlight to a cast of super-talented kids who rock out on the kind of songs you always wished had been in the movie... Rock on, kids, rock on." Marilyn Stasio for Variety
