Brighton Rock (2004-10-Almeida Theatre-London)
Type de série: OriginalThéâtre: Almeida Theatre (Londres - Angleterre) Durée : 1 mois 1 semaine Nombre : Première Preview : Tuesday 05 October 2004Première : Tuesday 05 October 2004Dernière : Saturday 13 November 2004Mise en scène : Michael Attenborough • Chorégraphie : Karen Bruce • Producteur : Avec : Michael Jibson (Pinkie), Sophia Ragavelas (Rose), Nicholas Lumley (FredHale), Harriet Thorpe (Ida Arnold), David Burt, Neil McCaul, Paul Bentall, Corinna Powlesland, Gary MilnerCommentaires : Graham Greene’s 1938 novel was adapted into a play and then the famous 1947 film starring Richard Attenborough as Pinkie. Although ostensibly an underworld thriller, the story has an underlying challenge to Roman Catholic doctrine concerning the nature of sin and the basis of morality. Pinkie and Rose are Catholics, as was Greene, and their beliefs are contrasted with Ida's strong but non-religious moral sensibility. This musical version was directed by Richard Attenborough’s son, Michael, with music by the great film-score composer, John Barry and lyrics by Don Black. It was, however, a flop, with a general consensus that uninspired music and lyrics added nothing to a dark, disturbing and complex morality tale.

Durée : 5 mois Nombre : Première Preview : Thursday 24 March 2005Première : Thursday 14 April 2005Dernière : Saturday 17 September 2005Mise en scène : Gale Edwards • Chorégraphie : Karen Bruce • Producteur : Avec : Hadley Fraser (Ashton Pelham-Martyri), Marina Abdeen (Sita), David Burt (Lt. Hamilton), Dean Hussain (Awal Shah), Dianne Pilkington (Belinda), Gayatri Iyer (Princess Anjuli), Fiona Wade, Marina Abdeen, Hannah Chick, Meryl Fernandes, Graham VickCommentaires : Margaret Mary Kaye’s 1978 novel “The Far Pavilions” became a world-wide best-seller, and was described as “a ‘Gone with the Wind’ of the North West Frontier”. In 1984 the novel was adapted into an epic three-part TV mini series starring Ben Cross as Ashton, Amy Irving as Anjuli, and featuring Omar Sharif, Christopher Lee, John Gielgud, Robert Hardy, Saeed Jaffrey and Rupert Everett. It was another huge success with world-wide sales. When her permission was sought to turn the work into a musical, M.M. Kaye publicly wondered if this would not be a step too far. She died, aged 95, just as rehearsals began for its musical premiere. Several critics did, indeed, claim this was an adaptation too far. However, it was so splendidly vulgar, with lavish costumes, a sung-through score, an endlessly revolving stage-set, a touch of the Bollywoods and some gloriously over-the-top performances, that the overall reaction was one of pleasure.Presse : PAUL TAYLOR for THE INDEPENDENT says, "The under-cast and uninterestingly "effective" production by Gale Edwards boasts great costumes, one or two lovely sets."
LYN GARDNER for THE GUARDIAN says, "No, it's not high art, but it is not kitsch rubbish.
BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "If you feel like being swept along by romance, melodrama and Anglo tunes, you might do worse than sample Gale Edwards’s production."

This production opened in Cardiff and had been on tour since January before moving into the West End. In June, at the end of his six months’ contract, Stephen McGann left the cast and was replaced by David Essex. In spite of excellent bookings the West End run ended in November because the Novello Theatre had been pre-committed to a Royal Shakespeare Company season. (There had been an earlier UK touring production in 2004, starting in Plymouth and running for six months, directed by Paul Kerryson.)

Amen to that!" DOMINIC CAVENDISH for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, " Karen Bruce's production is all revved-up but can't disguise the fact that it has no great journey to take us on...it now just looks hopelessly out of date." It was a lavish £3 million production with songs written by Gary Barlow and several others, and received very good notices. It ran for six months, closing on November 15th because the Savoy was p r e - b o o k e d f o r “Carousel”. The original plan had been to transfer “Never Forget” to the smaller Lyric Theatre, but it seems the producers wanted to pay lower salaries at the smaller theatre, and Equity resisted. With such a large cast the show had rarely covered its weekly costs, so the transfer was abandoned. It was said the entire £3 million investment was lost on this showPresse : FIONA MOUNTFORD for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Ed Curtis's production is a riot of fake tans, outrageous costumes and the highest-octane choreography the West End has seen in years."
ESTHER WALKER for THE INDEPENDENT says, "The show is good. It's fast-paced and lively, funny and easy on the eye, and the songs have been lovingly and faithfully adapted to the stage."
CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "I was both smiling and tapping my foot...Pacy production is blessed with a succession of highly energetic, enjoyably erotic dance routines."
LYN GARDNER for THE GUARDIAN says, "There are flashes of droll humour, the actors are engaging and there is a lively vulgarity."
DOMINIC MAXWELL for THE TIMES says, "While it's played at a zip and sung with a smile, it's terrible old cobblers and it knows it."
