Musical (2003)

Musique: Rod Stewart
Paroles: Rod Stewart
Livret: Ben Elton
Production à la création:

From the sexy mean streets of Detroit to the glamorous clubs and the Rockstar mansions of LA and Beverly Hills, Tonight's The Night tracks the story of Stu Clutterbuck a quiet, shy guy, so hung up and tongue tied that he can not even find the courage to declare his love to Mary, the sweet, wholesome girl of his dreams.
How different Stu is to his hero, that legendary rock'n'roll vagabond Rod Stewart - now there's a guy who never had any trouble hitting on a girl.
One night, alone and desperate, Stu reflects that if he could only be more like Rod then Mary would surely be his and for that, Stu would sell his very soul. In less time than it takes to say hot legs Mephistopheles, agent of Satan, turns up ready to make a deal. If Stu commits his soul to reside in Hell for all eternity, the Devil will give Stu the soul of Rod Stewart and then it will be Bye Bye Mr. Dull Guy and hello ladies!
Stu is about to learn the hard way that you can't find true love using another man's moves and that Devil or no Devil there's only one Rod Stewart.

Commentaires : This was another of Ben Elton’s catalogue shows, wrapping a story around a series of hit songs. Even before it opened it was being referred to as “We Will Rod You”. Just like “We Will Rock You”, the critics hated this show, describing it as written on the back of an envelope while waiting for the kettle to boil. With top-price tickets at £55, it was rapidly known as “We Will Rob You”. However, perhaps aware of how wrong they were over the Freddie Mercury tribute, this time most critics were able to praise the music, the choreography and the songs, whilst hating the thin story, smutty humour, gratuitous gay banter and crude sexual stereotyping. The show ran for eleven months.
Presse : LYN GARDNER for THE GUARDIAN says, "A little gaudy, bawdy, over-amplified entertainment."

BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "Pretty dim stuff, not helped by less-than-lively dialogue....but we still get some ebullient tunes."

NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "A book of flamboyant silliness that interferes with the pleasure of hearing Rod Stewart's biggist hits.."

ADAM SCOTT for THE INDEPENDENT says, "The songs serve the plot. And what a lot of service it needs."

SARAH HEMMING for THE FINANCIAL TIMES says, "Ben Elton's script is cheerfully daft...."
