References to “heroin” were removed, “Mainline” became “starlight”, and for the great sleep-in number, the whole cast produced condoms. This revival was described as a professional, efficient but dated show, compared with the original which had been a genuine expression of the spirit of the times. It closed on November 20th with losses approaching £2 million. The cast had all agreed to take significant wage cuts during the last few weeks in an attempt to keep the show afloat.

However, this updating made no real sense: a musical about the lost “love and peace” generation became one about brash layabouts refusing to grow up; Claude was no longer the hapless victim of a policy forcing young men into the killing fields, rather he now volunteers for the army. It was generally felt that “Hair was truly a period piece which belonged in the 1960s, and this attempt at updating it did not really work. However, it was agreed the show still has one of the best musical scores to come out of that decade, well worth hearing again.

It went on to win several awards including the Tony Award for Best Musical Revival. Within six months it had recouped its entire $5,760,000 investment, becoming one of the fastest-recouping musicals in Broadway history. After a year’s run, the original cast transferred to London and a mostly new tribe took over on Broadway. However, Broadway sales dropped with this cast change and the show closed on June 27, 2010 after 29 previews and 519 regular performances. (A touring version then ran for fourteen months through the USA returning to Broadway for ten weeks in the summer of 2011)
Most of the original cast transferred to London where the show received very enthusiastic reviews and a tremendous audience reaction. Under Equity rules the American performers were only allowed to play for six months, after which they would need to be replaced by English performers.
