Commentaires longs: Dossier de presse du CD de Aida avec les chanteurs internationaux: Boyz II Men, Spice Girls, Heather Headley, Dru Hill, Janet Jackson, Elton John, Lenny Kravitz, Lulu, Kelly Price, LeAnn Rimes, Sherie Rene Scott, Sting, James Taylor, Tina Turner, Shania Twain.
Presse : Following the blockbuster success of "The Lion King," it's no surprise that Disney approached Elton John and Tim Rice about another collaboration. It is a pleasant surprise that their creation, AIDA, lacks the bombast of a commercial behemoth. Although they stay true to Verdi's story of love amidst oppressive politics, the music is adapted to contemporary styles and sung unpretentiously by a cast of superstars, starting with Sting, Janet Jackson, Boyz II Men, Leann Rimes, Lenny Kravitz, Shania Twain, the Spice Girls, and Tina Turner. The result is less Disney, more Red Hot and Verdi: Sly and Robbie pair up with Sting on a reggae-ish "Another Pyramid," the Spice Girls make like the Supremes on a humorous "My Strongest Suit," Kravitz adds funk and muscle to "Like Father Like Son," and Turner and Angelique Kidjo turn in a wonderful duet on "Easy as Life." Before the Broadway version kicks in, this recording is a rare chance to hear the music without the star power getting in the way. Martin Johnson, Barnes & Noble

Presse : Beautiful music! A fresh idea-the best work in this vernacular since THE BOY FRIEND" - Martin Gottfried, NEW YORK POST

"A hit! One of the freshest, warmest, funniest theatrical experiences. By all means, go!" - Bill Zakariasen, NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

"An uncommonly light and antic touch. The first of its kind that could happily play in an old ladies' home in Dubuque. Quite honorably delightful" - Alan Rich, NEW YORK

"The brightest, tunefullest, wittiest, most elegant, refined, gracious and entertaining musical in Years! VVVV (Highest rating)" - Carll Tucker, THE VILLAGE VOICE

"We may all rejoice. Hilarious, delicious, a musical done with wit, charm and plenty of tongue-in-cheek" - Sylvie Drake, LOS ANGELES TIMES

"Sublime smash hit! There are even girls in the show so what more can you want? The wit here is infectious, the style keen!" - Ray Loynd, L.A. HERALD-EXAMINER

"A delightful evening. Super-slick, super-pro, clever and witty!" - Bill Edwards, DAILY VARIETY

"The music and lyrics, crafted by Bill Solly, are reminiscent of Cole Porter's fiendish cleverness. On one level BOY MEETS BOY is a skilled exercise in nostalgia, but it gains added significance from the fact that its two romantic leads are men. BOY MEETS BOY is magical because its calm and amusing acceptance of its heroes is pure illusion, sad to say but great fun to see" - Edmund White

"BOY MEETS BOY is one of the most audacious, boldest, shockingly original theatrical gestures in the history of the art. It rewrites the past and presents it just as entertainment, not in the Orwellian sense of trying to convince anyone the past was like that but saying that it ought to have been"- Robert Patrick

"Outrageously high camp at an exceptionally fast pace. Can a straight appreciate it? The answer is yes!" - Regis Philbin, ABC TV, Los Angeles

Commentaires : With its initial 12 year run in the West End, this became one of the longest-running shows (and would later be revived in 2007 for a further 18 months) whilst in-between times it toured non-stop through the UK.
Its Broadway production in 1990 ran for just 225 performances.
It was originally conceived by Laurie Mansfield and Paul Elliot with support from Paul McCartney (who owned the copyrights to Buddy Holly's music) Paul McCartney objected to many inaccuracies in 1978 film version of Buddy Holly’s life and was happy to support a show which told a truer story.

Commentaires longs: Concert to benefit Equity Fights Aids/Actors Fund of Canada (netting over $80,000 for the cause).
There were no sets, but a rear projection added some visual interest with scenes from the Hungarian Revolution, chess games, and other chess-related images. The concert was broadcast on Canadian television. The cast sang and acted in front of a full orchestra, in costume. Several dancers were used for "One Night in Bangkok." The progress of the chess match was illustrated by projected newspaper headlines. As can be seen below, material was drawn from several versions and there were a few oddities: the Arbiter sang a stanza not used since the first weeks of the London production ("Don’t try to tempt me/You’ve no hope/I don’t like women/I don’t take dope…") which made little sense as the character was played as on Broadway, not as in London. However, as with all concert versions, the reception for this one was rapturous.

Commentaires : This revival, 25 years on, was chosen to open the newly renovated and restored Lyceum Theatre. It was highly praised as a darker, less glittery and much stronger production than the original, and newcomer Steve Balsamo was generally hailed as the best sung Jesus ever, and a star in the making. Commentaires : This was an updated version of the Dumas novel “La Dame aux Camélias” and was received very favourably by the critics, with special praise for Ruthie Henshall. However, it was a dark tale and failed to catch on with the public. Originally scheduled to run until the beginning of November, lack of business led to its early closing on September 13 th . Since then it has undergone major re-writing and the new version has been staged in Japan and in the Czech Republic
Presse : NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Engaging production...The musical, both its book and music, did not greatly captivate me, but I was impressed by the way it raises serious moral questions. "
CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "It's a serious disappointment...There's no real tension in the writing, while the characterisation is flaccid in the extreme."
BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, " Decent, enjoyable but not exactly thrilling show."
PAUL TAYLOR for THE INDEPENDENT says, "Fluent, strikingly designed production...a compelling, if flawed, new work."
MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "If you can accept a musical with a less-than-sympathetic heroine, then there are things to savour...Fast-moving production."

Commentaires : A new tour to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the show began performances on 12 December 2009, at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff. This touring version included a new set, new costumes, new direction and alterations to the original orchestrations. There was no revolving stage and the scenery was inspired by the paintings of Victor Hugo. The tour then played seven major UK dates, and a special engagement in Paris, before returning to the Barbican, where the original 1985 production commenced. This tour ended its run at the Barbican.
Trevor Nunn, stated publicly that he was profoundly unhappy and felt betrayed that something inferior has been created by outsiders, and that he had not been consulted or involved in the new production. Cameron Mackintosh replied :
Commentaires longs: “I am saddened by Trevor's inaccurate and ungracious remarks. After 25 years, I wished to create a new production that reflected the contemporary appeal of the musical today and it seemed right to engage the energies of a new younger team to do this. I believe that each new generation has to be able to put its own stamp on great material. Over 18 months ago and at every subsequent stage we informed Trevor and John Caird and John Napier of our plans. It is wholly untrue that they were in any way 'kept in the dark'. It is bewildering to me that Trevor Nunn who has spent much of his brilliant career reimagining existing material should be questioning the right of others to do so with Les Miserables.”

Dates du Tour: Palace Theatre, Manchester: UK. Ran from 19 January – 13 February 2010 / Theatre Royal, Norwich: UK. Ran from 16 February – 20 March 2010 / Birmingham Hippodrome: Birmingham, UK. Presse : "In David Grindley's strongly cast revival, it strikes me as a decent enough piece, but over-reliant on the conventions of army comedy and lacking in real anger at the way disabled servicemen are often thrown on to the scrapheap."
Michael Billington for The Guardian

"Sharp, robustly funny...The production negotiates the sudden switches of mood (from the uproarious to the melancholy) with aplomb; there's sensitivity in the punchy performances; and the play makes its case all the more powerfully for never becoming preachy or programmatic. "
Paul Taylor for The Independent

"The problem is it hasn’t really anywhere to go. Each scene is beautifully crafted, but they don’t quite join to form a narrative arc, and the tragic denouement feels uncomfortably bolted on to a play that is touching and amusing, but oddly lacking in shape. "
Jane Shilling for The Daily Telegraph

"Director David Grindley coaxes a terrific sense of edgy camaraderie and snappy loyalty from the group, who handle with sensitivity the men’s growing awareness that, outside Army life, a highly uncertain future awaits. "
Fiona Mountford for The Evening Standard

Commentaires : This was a revised and re-staged version of the original production at the Barbican, September 1982. It had undergone rather a lot of changes - possibly to make it more acceptable for a planned Broadway transfer - but this time round it received a critical drubbing, including: “It collapses amidst the stuffing and garnishing of a cumbersome, shamefully under-rehearsed and embarrassingly under-cast production”

Avec : Denise van Outen
Commentaires : Originally part of the “Song and Dance” double-bill staged at the Palace Theatre over 20 years ago, this had now been expanded into a stand-alone piece. It had been substantially updated (to include the internet, e-mails and mobile phones) and re-written, with the unnamed girl writing home to Mum in Ilford (originally it was Muswell Hill - in 1982 Marti Webb was far more Jewish than Essex girl Denise van Outen). The show was still presented as a one-act song-cycle, now running for 90 minutes. There was much praise for Denise van Outen, and although the material itself received a mixed reaction, the show ran ten months. The BBC critic observed, "This may be the smallest show Lloyd Webber's ever written, but the score (to appropriately conversational lyrics by Don Black) contains several of his very best songs."
During the run Marti Webb returned to her old part and, following the West End run, subsequently toured the UK with the show, alternating with Faye Tozer and Patsy Palmer.
Presse : MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "Although it has some good songs, it seems a slight piece that is scarcely rendered more plausible by the presence of the sassy, sexy Denise Van Outen."

RHODA KOENIG for THE INDEPENDENT says, "Lloyd Webber's music is laughably trite. Van Outen seems a nice girl, but her singing and acting are very average."

BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, " She’s [Van Outen] at her best when Don Black’s often adroit, witty lyrics allow her to be sharp, funny and derisive about men."

CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "It's trite, it's sentimental, it is profoundly second-rate."

NICK CURTIS for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "It feels old. Without Van Outen, I suspect it would feel even older."
