Genèse:
Résumé: A family musical. Never one to ignore a challenge, adventurer Phileas Fogg, his servant Passepartout and the beautiful Aouda face the most fearsome and fantastic days of their lives. They risk everything to prove that the world can be circled in eighty days - and they've saved a place aboard for you! Brave the waves onboard the ship, climb the clouds in the basket of a balloon, hold on for dear life to the back of a bad tempered elephant - when time's this tight, no transport's too treacherous. But what of arrest, bandits, evil enemies, and the love of a lady? Will such surprises trip up his triumphant return?

It was welcomed as a jolly piece of dated nostalgia.

Cependant, “despite references to Charles and Camilla and shopping at Bluewater, the show still seems like a series of US sitcom snapshots” (The Times).

This production of King Lear puts a mother at the heart of the action - supposing that it is a queen who, weary of public office, divides the kingdom amongst her daughters. But the old woman finds it impossible to retire gracefully and as her mental faculties begin to fail she's cast out by her eldest children, as their sister prepares to lead a French invasion in retaliation. Meanwhile the Duke of Gloucester's equally ruthless son plots to steal his brothers inheritance and the younger generations align in a savage plot to mercilessly destroy their parents. But will they succeed?

Phil Willmott's new interpretation of Shakespeare's classic thriller of jealousy, illicit passion and racial tension is set during the British Raj and commemorates the centenary of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre (also known as the Amritsar massacre).Commentaires longs: A bold and audacious new staging of Shakespeare's classic thriller in which the General Othello and his new wife, Desdemona are psychologically tortured and destroyed by a jealous, subordinate, Iago.
Phil Willmott's new interpretation of Shakespeare's classic thriller of jealousy, illicit passion and racial tension is set during the British Raj and commemorates the centenary of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre (also known as the Amritsar massacre).
One of the most infamous and shameful incidents of Britain's colonial rule of India, this atrocity saw British & Indian officers fire into a gathering of unarmed local protesters. The resulting international and local condemnation was a major factor in the ensuing deterioration of British authority in India leading to the eventual collapse of the Raj. The British had recently instigated a disastrous scheme whereby selected Indian soldiers were to be promoted into higher officer ranks in the British Army. These Indian cadets were sent to study in Great Britain at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, in anticipation of promotion to King's Commissioned Officers, with full authority over British troops. However, far from home, at Sandhurst these Indian recruits were pitted against upper-class Englishmen and mercilessly bullied in conditions alien to their upbringing and experience. Of the first batch of 25 cadets admitted ten failed to meet the requisite standard, two died, two resigned, and one was deprived of his commission. This adaptation presumes that English Army Chaplain, Cassio, and the Indian Officer recruit, Othello, survived their Sandhurst training together, becoming friends, during which time they first met Desdemona. Upon graduation Othello has been fast tracked to the rank of General in an Indian outpost, now under the jurisdiction of Desdemona's father, The Duke. She and Othello secretly marry and he sends for his old friend, Cassio to be his Lieutenant. Iago, Othello's sociopathic English Orderly (a soldier assigned to a commissioned officer as a personal servant), is prevented from raising any higher in the army by his lower-class background and is deeply resentful of Othello. With the reluctant participation of his newly arrived wife, Emilia, Iago plots the destruction of the Indian General, who is already isolated and conflicted by his role collaborating in and enforcing the British occupancy of his native land. This production is running as part of Phil Willmott's 4th Essential Classics Season at the Union Theatre.

It was extremely well received by the critics and public, and acclaimed as a triumphant example of how a fringe, shoe-string production could work just as well as the grandest of stagings.

Blake Edwards re-made the film in 1982 with music and lyrics by Henry Mancini and Leslie Bricusse, and with his wife, Julie Andrews in the lead. In 1995 he adapted this into a Broadway musical, again starring Julie Andrews. Extra songs were needed and Mancini and Bricusse started work on the project, but sadly Mancini died, and newcomer Frank Wildhom completed the score. It opened in New York in October 1995 and ran for 734 performances. Julie Andrews was nominated for a Tony but rejected the nomination because, as she explained in a curtain speech, “However, flattered as I am, and honoured to be nominated, I have to say how deeply sad I am to be the only nominee in this extraordinarily gifted company.” However, Julie Andrews and the show received and won several other awards from the Drama Desk and Outer Circle critics. Julie Andrews stayed with the show for almost two years, during which she took a short holiday when Liza Minelli stood in. A great scandal ensued when the leading man walked out in protest at Minelli’s poor performance. When Julie Andrews finally left the show in June 1997 she was replaced with Raquel Welch, but without its legendary star, the show came off very quickly.
