Musical (2009)

Musique: Leon Parris
Paroles: Leon Parris
Livret: Russell Labey
Production à la création:

Psycho-sexual musical thriller. The musical centres around two teenage boys who share an intimate adventure in a boy's home. Bernie has attempted suicide and David is a street hustler who may or may not have the powers of a wolf. Of course we all know werewolves don't exist. And people have to grow up. And stories must end. And as this one does we move further from fantasy to the cold reality of the corruptive devastation that is wrought by child abuse and neglect.

Based on the play by Canada’s leading playwright, Brad Fraser, “Wolfboy” was first staged in 1981 and had a major revival in Toronto in 1985 with Keanu Reeves in one of his earliest stage roles.

The musical was previewed between July 1 and July 4, 2009, at Tabard Theatre in Chiswick and had a run in 2009 at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, featuring Gregg Lowe as Bernie, Paul Holowaty as David and Lee Latchford-Evans from Steps.

In 2010 it was presented at Trafalgar Studios in London, featuring Gregg Lowe as Bernie, Paul Holowaty as David, Daniel Boys as Christian, Emma Rigby as Nurse Cherry and Annabel Howitt as Annie. This staging of Wolfboy was produced from July 6 through July 31, 2010, directed by Russell Labey, with Iain Vince Gatt as musical director.

Commentaires : The musical version by Russell Labey and Leon Parris had a four-night preview at the Tabard Theatre in Chiswick prior to opening at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August 2009. The original cast included Paul Holowaty, Gregg Lowe and Lee Latchford-Evans from “Steps”. With just a few minor revisions, the production was re-staged for its premiere at the Trafalgar Studios, previewing from July 6th, and running until the end of the month. Large parts of the show were “sung-through” and the music was pre-recorded. Because two of the performers were leading players in TV’s “Hollyoaks” it attracted good business, but its homo-eroticism, and sado-masochistic themes, together with its graphic sex scenes, proved too much for the majority of the critics who found it offensive.
